Single Review: Friday Afternoon – Love Ghost

This single review is of up and coming rock band, Love Ghost from Los Angeles, CA.  “Friday Afternoon” is the first single from the newcomer act.  They describe themselves as “90’s grunge and alternative rock”, which I would say is quite accurate.

I love the heavy distortion that kicks the song off.  The melodic strumming was unexpected, as is the vocals when they come in.  It reminds me of Silverchair, or a mellow version of Nirvana.  Very grunge-ish indeed.  I’m not a fan of the lyrical content; quite frankly it’s boring.  However the musical production is very nice.

I wish the band had something I had never heard before – maybe adding in some pop elements (you can never have too much keyboards), none the less, it’s a nice song.  I hate how the drums are recorded – sounds like wet cardboard being beaten with a stick.  I’m not sure if that was what they were aiming for, but if I had recorded this track, I would have mixed the drums and guitar entirely different.

Love Ghost definitely has potential to make it big.  I just wish it was a different energy that I haven’t heard before.  The bridge build up is a nice change, but the song overall sounds like shit.

Looking forward to more songs that are hopefully better mixed.
