It’s almost time for the United States of Texas Benefit Concert! This Saturday, July 16th Mark McKinney and friends are throwing a special concert to benefit the victims of Hurricane Harvey in Port Aransas, TX. This little town is on the waterfront off the Gulf of Mexico, and was nearly destroyed by the hurricane.
The lineup alone should make for a great night. A little highlight of the list of performers:
Both headlining and producing the show, is country artist, Mark McKinney. Fresh off of a new album release, “World In Between”, his latest release has been getting serious radio play; notably the bluesy single “Bridge”. With over three albums on his roster already, “World In Between” is a slight contrast to his previous works, but still brings that country passion and rock edge. Country radio has already started to play “Bridge” in rotation, and his show at the benefit will surely not disappoint.
Next up is the Ray Johnston Band who #GoesGoodWith Texas! Those who enjoyed the Ray Johnston Band’s last album may be wary that their EP, #GoesGoodWith, contains what may be the first social media-ready album title from the country music realm. These six songs find the band with their most sonically fit work to date. Its the type of music that sounds just right at that honky tonk around the corner.
Although one of our favorite tracks of theirs is from an older album – the song “Keep It Rollin” is really something special in our opinion – the Ray Johnston Band is another reason why people look to Texas if their tastes in country is more towards George Strait than Keith Urban.
Judson Cole Band rocks any stage they step onto. Frontman Judson Cole can usually be found playing a host of instruments – acoustic and electric guitar, harmonica, sometimes bass, and even, occasionally a little banjo. Rylee Ramos handles drums and percussion, Bobby Schuyler lays down lead guitar and harmony vocals, mixing in some bass and keys from time to time, Kory Rogers on keys and sing harmonies, and Adrian Guillen on bass guitar.
These guys are so proud to be part of the Texas Country music scene, which is why they are perfect to support this tight knit community and benefit show.
Jake Ward’s live show is nothing short of a joyful performance. Ward displays an astonishing vocal range and songwriting skills that shine through in his live performance. The guy has some serious pipes! Paul Teltschik is an outstanding young lead guitarist whose repertoire of lead solos tend to draw standing ovations. Jake Ward’s band is tight, disciplined, and the perfect compliment to Jake’s style.
Sarah Hobbs is the next songstress on the bill. From humble beginnings in Jefferson, to attending college at Texas A&M University-Commerce, she’s now making a name for herself as a strong voiced, independent Texas singer and songwriter. Hobbs opened for Hickory Hill’s winter bluegrass show at Music City Texas. Sarah brings a nice musical bridge between traditional and modern country, and with writing and performing her own material, she puts her heart on the stage at every show.
Kylie Rae Harris brings a soulful sound full of personal experiences and deep songs to the stage. Her beauty and grace leaves anyone who sees her simply enchanted. Kylie can sing harmonies that make old bluegrass guys, gospel singers, and big-time musicians stop and grin. She can pick up the guitar and play by ear exceptionally well, and can write a song that sounds unlike anything else you’re used to in typical country. A mother of one, and a rockstar in training, Kylie is sure to bring joy to your ears.
Last but not least on the bill is Miss Adrian Johnston of McKinney, Texas who currently resides in Dallas, Texas. She is no stranger to opening up for Mark McKinney, and her sweet voice makes for a great addition to any show.
Now with all this great music, it is certainly worth the small ticket price. But lets not forget that this is all for a great cause!
If you are not local to Texas and can’t attend the show physically, but you still want to help, there is still plenty of options.
