This past week we caught up with new soul artist, Saint Spicer and chatted about her new single, “On Repeat” and launching her first record, “Space Cowboy”. Check out the interview below, and give her a listen and follow!

M4B: Hey Saint! Thanks for joining us today for an interview. I’m loving the soul and sultry vibe of your music. How did you go about developing your sound? What would you classify your music as?

Thank you, I appreciate that! I think my music right now is definitely in a Soul genre, but I am preparing to release some funkier tunes. As far as developing a sound, I try to only move forward with sounds that speak to my soul. For “On Repeat,” I felt like the sample you hear at the beginning really spoke to me. It’s almost like you could build a whole auditory world or story around it.

M4B: The lyrics feel like they’re from real deep down in your soul. What’s your song process like? Do you come up with lyrics first or do you need a melody to feel inspired?

For my writing process, it could go either way. For this particular song, I definitely needed to hear that sample. The producer, Born Soul, put together this track while we were in the studio together and the first words! “I remember back when I was 18” came to mind. I wrote the first verse within 20 minutes! The things that make it pop though, the bass guitar and the saxophone, came a bit later.

M4B: What sparked the album title, “Space Cowgirl”? That’s pretty cool and unique!

Space Cowgirl is based loosely on the anime Cowboy Bebop, as well as the space adventures of Parliament’s Mothership Connection. I felt like these creative works were great escapes for me this past year, and I really wanted to use them as a springboard to learn more about myself. This album is a funk/jazz/pop/soul/blues album and if that sounds amazing, trust me, it is. I’m so proud of what is to come!

M4B: I loved that acoustic version of your song “Volatile” on Youtube! Do you plan on putting out more videos anytime soon? I’m totally digging the stripped down acoustic vibe.

Thank you! And yes, I have a music video for “On Repeat” coming out later this month. I think you’ll really like it because it’s a complete 180 visually to what the song sounds like. It will put a new layer of depth to it.

M4B: So lets talk a little bit about your newest single, “On Repeat”. I love your vocals on the track. So full of life! Kind of reminds me a little bit of a Lana Del Ray meets R+B style. Was that on purpose? What was your writing process for this record?

For “On Repeat,” I definitely wanted to have a moment of a “fall from grace”. Where things built up vocally and musically and then there was a release of energy where the woman speaking fell. I tried to keep that together with the image of “falling leaves of ecstasy”, and the vocal changes during this part of the song.

M4B: Do you have a release date set yet for your record, “Space Cowgirl”? I saw you had a Bandcamp donation going. Tell us a little about that!

Yes! We have donations up for folks who want to be credited on the album. We are in the middle of a transition, the idea was to record and release Space Cowgirl one song at a time, but I released some of the transition songs, like “Freaky Black” which is available on Bandcamp for a donation, wouldn’t make sense without the rest of the album. So we’ve taken a step back and tried to think about a good release strategy. We are still working everyday towards a Spring 2020 release!

M4B: Since we are a food blog too, I have to ask you – what’s your favorite go to food? Also, are you more of a cook at home kinda gal or do you enjoy the local eateries?

I wish I was more of a cook at home person! I definitely enjoy eating at home more but I’m on the road so much I don’t have the time. My go-to is really quick and easy: I get some Parmesan truffle porcini mushroom raviolis from our local grocery, and sauté some cherry tomatoes sliced in half, and some garlic in butter. Then I add a dollop of sour cream and mix it all together and pour over the raviolis! It takes 10 minutes and is super gourmet—you can easily add shrimp to level it up.

M4B: Sounds yummy! Speaking of local, where are you based out of? Are you performing any shows this summer or 2019?

I am based out of Austin, Texas, and I will definitely be performing this summer! Right now, I’m focused on training for that—my performances are my strongest point and I love leveling them up. This summer I’m hoping to begin performing on my Lyra. It’s a spinning circus hoop that is 4 to 6 feet in the air!

M4B: What are some other musical plans or happenings you have going on this year?

My main focus is on cultivating this Space Cowgirl/funk brand. I’m really excited to get this done right, because I think the world is ready for more mainstream funk

M4B: Lastly, tell us where we can find you online! What’s your social links etc.

I’m @saintsaidso on all platforms!
